Gary L. Gay, 57, of Lexington, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at his home. Born October 17, 1952 in Mansfield, he was the son of Jay Z. and Retha M. Gay. He served in the U.S. Navy and was employed with the International Brotherhood of Pipefitters and Steamfitters. Gary enjoyed traveling, especially out West, and outdoor activities such as fishing, and hunting. A well liked man, Gary enjoyed playing around with electronics.
He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Lanny and Marina Gay of Douglas, Wyoming; brother, Villard Gilliam of Mansfield; mother, Retha M. Gay of Olive Hill, Kentucky; aunt, Dorothy O'Brian of Panama City, Florida; cousins, Dan and David O'Brian, both of Houston, Texas; half sister, Alice Jean Martin of Port St. Joe, Florida; niece, Jenelle Shartigar of Shelby; and nephew, Cheston J. Gilliam of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his father, Jay Z. Gay and uncle, Ernest O'Brian.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Mansfield, conducted by Pastor Mark Dettmer, where military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
