Dr. Marvin Frederick Dees, 88, of Mansfield, ascended Friday March 12, 2010. Born August 10, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Frederick and Bertha (Weiher) Dees. Dr. Dees attended Denison University where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Varsity Men’s Football team and was Junior Class President. He left Denison for the United States Army in 1944 where he served in the Medical Corps. He also served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Dr. Dees married Maxine Marie Grimes on July 4, 1947. They met ‘in the air’ on a DC3 during a flight from Cleveland to Atlanta. Maxine was serving as an American Airlines Stewardess and Dr. Dees was returning to Medical School. They married shortly thereafter.
Dr. Dees graduated from Emory Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia in 1949. After Interning at Louisville General Hospital and Veterans Hospital in Cleveland he moved his young family to Mansfield in 1954 to begin his medical practice in Internal Medicine. Dr. Dees was dedicated to his family, his patients and his medical practice.
Dr. Dees served the Richland County community in many professional and volunteer capacities including twelve years on the Mansfield City School Board with multiple terms as President, President of the Mental Health Association, Assistant Richland County Coroner and the American Cancer Society. He was a fifty year member of the Ohio State and Richland County Medical Associations. Dr. Dees was also a member of the American Association of Railway Surgeons and a Fellow of The American Geriatric Society. In addition, he was a member of the First Congregational Church for greater than fifty years and a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society. He enjoyed his membership at Kingwood Center where he often walked the grounds with friends. Throughout his life he took pleasure in cultivating a variety of trees and flowers. Dr. Dees was an active Republican engaging in political discussions with a keen interest in all public affairs. His thoughtful letters over the years have inspired many including the establishment of the Henry Fallerious Scholarship Fund at North Central State College.
Dr. Dees is survived by a daughter, Attorney Jodie Dees, a son, Dan Jennings Dees, a grandson, Kelly (Angie) Rose, and a great granddaughter Hailey Marie Rose, all of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine (Grimes) Dees and daughters Shelley Marie Dees and Deborah Ann Dees Rose as well as his parents.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Mansfield, OH 44906. Memorial services will be conducted by the Rev. David Hartzfeld and the Rev. David Sipes on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the above location.
